Inspiration for the cookie mix in a jar recipe

This year, I’ve been counting down the days ’til I could start using the “Advent Devotions & Christmas Crafts for Families” book by Victoria Duerstock. This beautiful book includes a devotional and journal for each day of Advent, plus instructions for a family-friendly holiday craft.

On day 1 of Advent, the daily craft is making cookie mix in a jar. I made a few simple adjustments to the recipe to make it gluten free and vegan, and I’m thrilled to share the modified recipe here.

My daughter and I made two batches of this cookie mix: one for us to enjoy as a family, and one to give her teacher for Christmas.

How to make gluten free cookie mix in a jar

To make one cookie mix gift, combine the following ingredients in a bowl:

Place this mixture into a 1-quart mason jar.

As an optional step here, add a circle of parchment paper to the jar to help keep the layers distinct. Then continue with your next layer, which is candy!

You can use 1 1/4 cups of almost any candy of your choice. I used chocolate-covered cranberries, which were a delicious seasonal option.

Here are some other great holiday choices:

As an optional step here, add another circle of parchment paper to separate the layers. Then top off your mason jar with these ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

You’re all done with your giftable ingredients, and now it’s time to decorate the jar!

Baking instructions for the cookies

If you want to print the jar tags I made for you, just scroll below! If you’d like to make your own cookie jar tags, write these baking instructions (or a shortened version of them) on a decorative tag:

  • In a bowl, whisk 1/2 cup melted unsalted vegan butter, egg replacer equivalent to one egg, and 2 tsp pure vanilla extract.
  • Add contents of jar to bowl, and stir to combine. Chill dough for 30 minutes.
  • Form dough into roughly 20 golf-ball sized portions, and place onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Edges will be set, but the middle of cookies will appear slightly undone.
  • Place on a rack to cool, then remove from the sheet pan.
  • Enjoy!
