A healthy, delicious breakfast: chocolate grapefruit protein shake

My favorite breakfast these days is my vegan chocolate protein shake with grapefruit essential oil. Here are all the delicious, nutritious ingredients, how they support you, and how they help you start your day right.

First things first: Water

Start with 1 ¼ cups water in your blender. Drinking water first thing in the morning helps rehydrate you after the night’s rest, and it helps release toxins from your body.

steps 1 through 4 for making shake

Step 1: Grapefruit essential oil

Just a couple drops of therapeutic grade grapefruit essential oil adds delicious flavor to the mix! These oil drops are so concentrated that they infuse the whole smoothie with their refreshing flavor.

Pro tip: Make sure you select a therapeutic grade oil any time you are ingesting it. Read the label carefully to ensure it is approved for internal use. I got mine from Mindful Soul Essentials

Step 2: Vegan chocolate protein powder

I used Raw Fusion Natural Chocolate for this recipe, and the nutrition facts label at the end of the post includes information for this brand. Protein is an essential macronutrient, and adding it to your morning smoothie will help you build and tone muscle, repair tissue, and manage hormones.

Instead of using a protein powder, you can also use a meal replacement shake instead. In addition to protein, these shakes include vitamins, minerals, and other benefits such as probiotics. My family and I have tried many meal replacement shakes, and our favorite is Shakeology by Beachbody

Step 3: Banana

One serving of a banana is either half a large one, or an entire medium-sized one. Bananas aid in digestion, reduce inflammation, relieve menstrual pain, promote heart health, and can even boost brain power. They also give your shake an extra creamy texture.

Pro tip: My family usually gets a large bunch of bananas at the beginning of each week. If they start to get overly ripe before we eat them all, I peel them, cut them in half, and freeze them so I can pop one in the blender for my morning shake.

Step 4: Natural Almond Butter

Add 1 tsp all-natural almond butter. My favorite is Barney Bare Butter with no added sugar or salt. This is a staple at our house. Barney’s website has a wealth of information about almond butter health benefits: it’s a great source of vitamin E, magnesium, copper, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and phosphorus. It is a great source of monounsaturated fat, protein, and fiber which are essential for heart health. Almond butter can help reduce your risk for heart disease and lower your LDL-cholesterol.

Step 5: Spinach

Add a large handful of spinach, or about one cup. The beauty of this ingredient is that you get all the nutritional benefits without changing the taste of your smoothie. The spinach is flavorless here, but it still packs its superfood punch. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K; minerals including folic acid, calcium, and iron; and antioxidants. All this serves to strengthen your bones, eyesight, and immune system, as well as promote heart health.

Pro tip: There is always plenty of fresh, bagged spinach on hand at our house. The moment it starts to look too wilted or like it’s about to go bad, I toss it in the freezer so none of it gets wasted, and I can use it in my morning shakes.

Step 6: Ice

The more ice you add, the frostier and thicker your smoothie will be!

Step 7: Blend Well

Our blender gets a lot of use – we typically run it several times a day. Therefore, a high quality blender is definitely worth the investment. Our Waring blender has held up for years and through multiple blade changes.

One of these days, we’ll get a Vitamix blender – my fantasy!

Pro tip: We keep a plastic spatula handy near the blender. Usually the protein powder, almond butter, and/or other ingredients cling a bit to the sides of the blender. After running the blender for a bit, we use the spatula to wipe down the sides, then run the blender again. You want to make sure all the good stuff gets in your smoothie!

Step 8: Enjoy!

I hope you’ll love this chocolate grapefruit protein shake and find fun, delicious ways to mix up the ingredients for a healthy breakfast or snack!
